VICTORY DAY: RI'S UNIQUE HOLIDAY
Originally known as VJ day (Victory over Japan Day), this holiday started in 1948 to celebrate our World War II triumph. Other states also celebrated it as well. But over the years, other states cashiered the holiday, but we kept it going. And even though the word Japan has been stricken from the name of the day, that's as far as the General Assembly has been willing to go. There are perennial attempts to change the name to something like Remembrance Day, but they never get further than committee.
