I worked at URI last year, teaching a class in physical comedy-- they recently sent me this, looking for some technical people.

Most of them have no benefits or travel, but might be fun if you are already in or nearby RI.

The University of Rhode Island, Department of Theatre
is seeking applications for Guest Artists for the upcoming 2008-2009
Season.  The positions we anticipate being able to fill are as follows:

Properties Master
    •assist in the design, construction and procurement of  properties
for four (4) major productions between September 2008-May 2009.
Supervise student crews in prop organization and maintenance.  Must
have experience in theatrical properties.  Part-time, limited, no benefits or travel.

Technical Director
    •assume primary responsibility for a 500 proscenium seat theatre and two blackbox theatres with flexible seating that annually produces four mainstage, two student directing projects and 20 Intro to Theatre
mini productions in-house as well as outside use of the facilities by the community-at-large.   Translate designer's plans into working drawings, construct and supervise construction and maintenance of
scenery.  Supervision of ATD, carpenters and students.   Must be able to work with allotted production budgets within the state purchasing system.  Full-time, limited, with benefits.  Start Date: 


Assistant Technical Director
    •assist in operation of scene shop, maintain inventory, shop cleanliness and safety, some supervision of workstudy and stagecraft
students.  Help with tool/equipment maintenance and assist in scenery construction.  Applicants should be familiar with basic carpentry,
operation of power tools and have some experience in operation of a
theatrical scene shop.   Part-time, limited, no benefits or travel.

Sound Designer
    •wanted for one or more major productions.  Responsible for
sound design and sound effects, including mics, for production season.
Must have previous theatrical sound experience.  Possibility of combining ME and Lighting Designer work with this position.  Guest
Artist, limited, no benefits or travel.

Master Electrician
    •wanted for production season (4 major productions) between September and May.  Responsible for ME design work.  Must
have previous theatrical electrical experience.  Possibility of combining
ME and Lighting Designer work with this position.  Guest Artist, limited, no benefits, or travel.

Master Carpenter
    •function as master carpenter for production season (4 major productions) between September and April.  Must have previous theatrical carpentry experience.

    •assist in construction, painting and installation of stage scenery, and stage machinery.  Must be able to read and interpret design and technical drawings.  Must have knowledge of basic scenic construction techniques using wood, steel, foams, fabrics and working knowledge of standard tools and welding equipment.  Skill in the use of power and hand tools required.  Knowledge in the operation of a counter-weight and proscenium theatrical rigging system a plus.  Ability to work effectively in a team-based environment.  Guest Artist, limited, no benefits, no travel.

Carpenter
    •function as carpenter for production season (4 major productions) between September and April.  Must have knowledge of basic scenic construction techniques using wood, steel, foams, fabrics and working knowledge of standard tools.  Knowledge in the operation of a counter-weight and proscenium theatrical rigging system a plus.
Ability to work effectively in a team-based environment.  Guest Artist,

STITCHER   
    •experience in full scale stage costume construction to alterations.  Requires strong organizational skills and ability to work with wide range of expertise from student workers to professional artistic staff and faculty.  Must have the ability to work with varied timetables.
Approximately 100 hours per semester.  Guest Artist, part-time, no benefits or travel.

Manton Avenue Big Top May 19! (Benefit)

BIGTOP! A Three-Ring Musicale

Local Celebrities Bring the Circus To Town in a Performance for The Manton Avenue Project on Monday, May 19th

Providence, R.I., (March 28, 2008) – Come one, come all to The Manton Avenue Project’s circus themed benefit entitled “BIGTOP! A Three-Ring Musicale” on May 19th at the Pell Chafee Performance Center, Citizens Bank Theater, 87 Empire St. in Providence. The evening will begin with a 6:00 PM cocktail hour, followed by the show at 7:00 PM, and refreshments and a chance to talk to the kids at 7:45 PM.

These eight tiny circus themed plays, each with an even tinier song, will be written by project kids in conjunction with special guest writers, Donald W. King, executive artistic director for Providence Black Repertory Company, Michelle Muscatello, WPRI Meteorologist, Lynne McCormack, Director of the Department of Art, Culture and Tourism, Councilman Cliff Wood, Ward 2 (College Hill), City of Providence and performed by professional actors from Trinity Repertory Company, Providence Black Repertory Company, The Gamm, and 2nd Story Theatre.

It will be directed by Peter Sampieri.

The Manton Avenue Project is a non-profit organization that unites children living in Providence’s Olneyville neighborhood with local theater professionals to create original theater together. Sunny von Kriegenbergh works to go on Exhibit
Providence Gallery chosen for Kriegenbergh Paintings

(Providence, Rhode Island - Westchester, New York, USA) April 29, 2008 - Artist Sunny von Kriegenbergh will attend an exhibition of her work at the Dead Cat Gallery, 669 Elmwood Avenue in Providence on Saturday, May 3rd.

Kriegenbergh, a well traveled Providence artist will be celebrated at a reception and viewing of her paintings which starts at 7pm. Live music will follow at 9pm featuring noted Vermont composer Tinker Lee Taylor (Diane Horstmyer) and Kip McCloud (Carol DeFeciani) with her band, Lucky 57. Other performers expected include the Chris Monti Band and The Oddkingoes.

The Dead Cat Gallery opened in 2005 at the former Hope Brewery Building as a non-profit art gallery & music venue and has been host to numerous artists including painters, screen printers, sculptors, theatrical productions, comedy and live musical performances of all genres.

Franco-American Mandolin Festival.

The Providence Mandolin Orchestra welcomes the Ensemble à Plectre de Toulouse, one of the oldest and largest mandolin orchestras in France to Rhode Island.

In celebration of the Ensemble's visit to the U.S. the Providence Mandolin Orchestra has organized the Franco-American Mandolin Festival, a multi-dimensional festival combining cultural, educational and musical exchange.

On Saturday, November 3, at 8:00, the Providence Mandolin Orchestra and the Ensemble à Plectre will perform a joint program in the accoustically pristine St. Martin's Church 8:00 at 50 Orchard Avenue in Providence (tickets $20) . This concert will feature highlights of each orchestra's individual repertoire and joint performances of masterpieces for modern mandolin ensemble including Yasuo Kuwahara's romantic Song for Japanese Autumn and Claudio Mandonico's energetic Music for Play.

Sunday, November 4, 2:00 in the afternoon, the Toulouse Mandolin Orchestra will give a full concert at St. Ann's Arts and Cultural Center in Woonsocket (82 Cumberland Street, tickets $15/$10 seniors and students). This concert will feature a wide range of contemporary compositions for mandolin orchestra as well as arrangements of pieces from the classical repertoire including Debussey's well known Girl with the Flaxen Hair and Rossini's Il Signor Bruschino. This concert is a benefit for the Woonsocket Arts and Cultural Center.

In addition, as part of this cultural exchange, the Festival is organizing a series of in-school demonstrations for French language students and for music students featuring performances by the French group combined with individual instruction on the mandolin and a brief history of the mandolin in France. But For the Grace... New play at Trinity Rep

Interesting new play at the Pell-Chafee Center at Trinity Rep starts on Monday, September 10th.

This play, written and directed by David Eliet, is a commission from the Rhode Island Community Food Bank to tell the stories about people who live with hunger as a part of their lives. It features as a solo performer Bob Jaffe, who has a long string of excellent and thought provoking work in the local area. David Eliet, the author/director, was my teacher and head of the Trinity Rep Conservatory while I was there. It is sure to be a very thought-provoking and well-done production. See it if you can!

Washington, D.C., 8/1/07

This summer, our nation's flea circus will not be performed in the White House or the Capitol Building, and will not feature any elected officials That's because this year, the flea circus will take place in Washington D.C's up and coming Atlas District, and will feature insects. Trained insects. Fleas, to be exact.

The show, the Acme Miniature Flea Circus, is an authentic Victorian flea circus that features trained fleas Midge and Madge who perform spectacular circus stunts as seen before (and on top of) the crowned heads of Europe. Midge and Madge will perform their star turn at D.C.'s wildest and wackiest venue, the Palace of Wonders on Sunday August 26.

Details magazine called the show "One of the top alternative circuses in the country." The New York Times said "The appeal is irresistible... Gertsacov is every bit the fantastical impresario, in his purple top hat and cash-register voice, introducing us to the wondrous insects itching (sorry) to perform" And the Los Angeles Times says that "Professor Gertsacov holds the audience (and the stars of the show) in the palm of his hand."

According to Professor A.G. Gertsacov, ringmaster and proprietor of the Acme Miniature Circus, flea circuses were popular entertainments during Victorian times, but had nearly disappeared since the advent of television. The last popular American flea circus was Professor Heckler's of Time Square, which left New York in 1957. The rumor is that Heckler thought that the nude shows were giving his fleas a bad name.

There are now only a handful of flea circuses still performing throughout the world. Gertsacov's is arguably the most famous. The Rhode Island native (now based in Yonkers, NY) and his amazing insect stars have performed throughout the country, and in Canada, Chile, and Brazil. He recently spent three months performing in Times Square, less than two blocks from where Professor Heckler once had his fleas. Gertsacov has also been filmed for documentaries on the History Channel, the Travel Channel, and numerous news programs. He's even been a question on Jeopardy!

Gertsacov's educated insect stars pull chariots, dance on a tightwire, and perform other circus-like stunts. While he does not reveal his method of training (a proprietary secret, he explains) , he assures the curious and the civic minded that he uses only methods of positive reinforcement to teach the insects their routines. "I treat them as if they are my own flesh and blood," Gertsacov says. "And in some ways, they are."

Professor Gertsacov will bring his minuscule marvels to perform at Washington's wildest and wackiest venue on Sunday August 26 . He invites all curious parties to come and see the show that was deemed one of the top shows of the world famous Spoleto Festival in 2004. But he asks that you leave your dogs and cats at home. Gertsacov quips, "I don't want anyone to steal the show."

Shows are at the Palace of Wonders, 1210 H Street NE in the Atlas District of Washington DC. Shows are at 4 pm and 8 pm. Admission is $8. The first show is for all ages. The second show is for over 21 only. (In this show, the fleas will perform completely nude!

King Stag Performed by Elemental Theatre Ensemble

I've been hearing about these guys for a while, but didn't realize that they were Conservatory grads. (I am also a Conservatory Grad as well, admittedly a lot earlier than these guys (like 14 years!)

They are performing a great Commedia play, King Stag through the month of August at venues around town. Admission is free.

Elemental is a theatre collective primarily made up of the Trinity Rep Conservatory Class of 2002. During three years of intensive learning and collaboration, they became determined to continue their growth as theatre artists together after graduation.

In the fall of 2005, they mounted their first full-length show in Providence, a critically acclaimed production of Tony Kushner’s incendiary A Bright Room Called Day. It was nominated for Best Production, Best Director and Best Actress by Motif Magazine that year.

They also produce an annual summer festival of short plays in Tiverton called Outbursts!

Cape Verdean Independence Festival

The 32nd Annual Cape Verdean Independence Day Celebration will be held in Providence at the Temple of Music at Roger Williams Park on July 8, 2007 from 12 noon to dusk. Featured will be music, food, dancing, and lots of other stuff. Some very traditional Cape Verdean artists will be featured, as well some of the newest and best artists of Cape Verdean descent will be on the bill. It's a great way to celebrate with the community.

Cape Verde is a group of islands in the North Atlantic Ocean, west of Senegal. The islands combined are slightly larger than Rhode Island. They were colonized by the Portuguese in the 15th century and became an independent country in 1975. There are over 40,000 Cape Verdeans and people of Cape Verdean descent in Rhode Island, and Rhode Island has been home to some Cape Verdeans for over 200 years.

Mayor Cicilline invites the public to provide additional feedback as winning design moves closer to implementation

PROVIDENCE – Mayor David N. Cicilline today invited the public to learn more about the concept design for Providence’s new waterfront parks in a presentation by the firm Brown, Richardson, and Rowe, the winning team in the Waterfront Park Design Competition. The firm’s lead designer, Nina Brown, will give a presentation and the public is encouraged to provide feedback at the next meeting Wednesday, June 6 at 5:30 p.m. Waterplace Restaurant,2nd floor One Finance Way in Waterplace Park Mayor Cicilline kicked off the Waterfront Park Design Competition last fall by asking design teams to develop their vision of a spectacular waterfront park on two parcels of land that will become available when Interstate Route I-195 is relocated. He appointed an 11-member design selection committee consisting of community leaders to pick the winning concept among 16 submissions. Brown, Richardson and Rowe emerged as the winner. The purpose of the meetings is to give the public an opportunity to help further refine the concept design for the two parks. The project must also meet contract schedules set forth by the Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT), which is building the parks as part of the highway relocation project. A video presentation of the proposed park designs and an opportunity to submit comments electronically may also be found online at www.providenceri.com/government/waterfront/. A great new exhibit of work(s) in a place near and dear to my heart-- the Jewelry District.

A 4000 square foot loft is scheduled to undergo serious renovation. Before it does, 7 artists and 2 architects get a chance to come in, and reconstruct/deconstruct their work. The results are fascinating, ,interesting, and sadly temporary. (The exhibit ends this weekend!)
